Penny Dunstan is a Newcastle (Australia) based artist, agronomist/soil scientist with a specific interest in worrying the decisions we make about land management, and open-cut coal mine rehabilitation. In her art practice she invites the land to represent itself through various techniques including drawing with materials from place, working with farmed topsoils and their plants; long exposure, limited interference, analogue, plant-scape photography; and a writing practice that acknowledges the old ways on Worimi and Wonnaura Country.

As an Artist/Scientist, Penny brings a unique view to both worlds. Penny holds a PhD in Fine Art exploring post-mining land rehabilitation in the Singleton area of the Hunter Valley. She also holds a Master in Agricultural Science. She spent many years teaching viticulture and consulting on farms in NSW. She tutored in Fine Art and Geology at Newcastle University.

She is currently a participating artist in LiddellWorks, run by Arts Upper Hunter to mark the closure of Liddell Power Station. Penny has just finished a Newcastle Light House residency where she drafted a speculative fiction short story.
